What We Believe

The Lord's Supper

Consistent with our understanding of New Testament practice, our denomination, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) -- or "Disciples" for short -- understands the Lord's Supper as a central piece of our weekly worship experience. As a result, our community takes communion together every Sunday. We believe communion is open to anyone who would like to participate. Worshipers serve the bread and cup to each another in remembrance of Jesus Christ. Everyone, members and visitors alike, is welcome to receive the bread and cup.

The Bible

Disciples have historically asserted the primacy of the Bible as witness to God's saving acts. We are opposed to human-made creeds that are used as tests of faith. Disciples emphasize the individual's right and responsibility to interpret and live out the lordship of Jesus Christ as encountered in the Bible.

Authority and Leadership

Under the lordship of Jesus Christ, the congregation makes decisions aboud leadership, programs, worship, etc. Elected lay leaders are engaged in the total life of the community. The congregation acts to elect officers, adopt budget, call ministers, and on any other matters of great importance.

Ministers are "called" by the congregation to positions of specific responsibility and authority.

Relationships

We celebrate our covenantal relationships with other Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregatons through Area (Trinity-Brazos Area), Regional (Christian Church in the Southwest) and General (U.S. and Canada) bodies. Both locally and as a denomination we cherish our participation in a number of ecumenical conversations and organizations.

About the Chalice

The chalice is the symbol of our denomination. It symbolizes the central place of communion in worship for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The X-shaped St. Andrew's cross is a reminder of the Scottish-Presbyterian roots of the church. The cross also stresses the importance of laity and evangelism, two commitments St. Andrew was known for.
