Our vision is to be a church that helps people COME ALIVE IN CHRIST by inviting them to reimagine church with us:

Not pride and judgment, but a sanctuary for restoring the soul – humble people sharing radical hospitality, and loving each other beyond our differences.

Not easy answers, but growing together through shared engagement with the scriptures and the hard questions of life and faith.

Not a self-serving institution, but a community in the community that truly sees our neighbor and that responds with the relational love of Christ.

SIMPLY CHRISTIANS

“No Creed but Christ, No Book but the Bible, No Law but Love”

We are Simply Christians.  We come from many different backgrounds and worldview:  political, age, and social views. We disagree on many things but are united around 3 important truths:

  • God loves all people with no exceptions

  • Jesus is the Christ and teaches us how to take better care of each other and the world

  • Everyone is welcome here

Most importantly, we believe in loving each other, especially, when we disagree.

OUR MISSION

Our mission is to share with ALL people the love of God that we experience in Jesus Christ our Lord.

We do this by welcoming everyone that comes through our doors into worship, study, and fellowship with us. We do this so we might glorify God together and grow in faith, hope, and understanding.  We also seek to fulfill this mission by reaching out to serve "the least of these" (Mt. 25) in our neighborhoods, Hood County, and beyond - with an emphasis on children and people struggling with hunger and health issues.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

We believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God, and our Lord and Savior. Our shared goal is to build our lives around glorifying God and following Jesus Christ to the best of our ability; each in our own way.

The Bible tells the story of God's redemptive power in the world and fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Everyone at FCC is encouraged to study and interpret the scriptures for themselves. We believe we know God more fully when the body of believers bring their own faith experiences to the table.

COMMUNION TABLE

The communion table is the central piece of our worship service and the cornerstone of our community life. We serve communion each week at an "open table," where all are welcome. Jesus welcomed all who would come into his presence. We invite anyone who would come to join us, despite what you look like, how you vote or who you call "family." We believe that everyone is welcome at the Lord's table with us, in worship among us, and in service to the world beside us.

Here at FCC Granbury, both men and women share equal leadership here. All people are encouraged to serve where they feel called.

CANDY STROUP
MINISTER of CARE & SPIRITUAL FORMATION

Candy (or Candace, if you prefer) is joyfully a fourth generation Disciple and connected with amazing church and biological families. She felt called to ministry as a teen, but life circumstances held that seminary education would happen later in life than the usual route. During that time, Candy continued to study and serve and feels that the Holy knew of the life experiences needed to inform her ministry. She received her Master of Divinity from Houston Graduate School of Theology (HGST) in 2008 and was ordained by the Christian Church of the Southwest that same year. She had begun Clinical Pastoral Education (chaplain training/residency) prior to graduation and continued working in chaplaincy until her retirement in 2021. For a couple of years, while still working more than full-time as a chaplain, Candy returned to HGST to study spiritual formation.

When the position of Minister of Care and Spiritual Formation was posted by FCC, Candy felt the shepherd’s crook pulling her toward it. She is grateful and excited to work with the Holy, with the awesome FCC staff, and with the amazing FCC congregation/community.

WHERE WE'VE BEEN...

The official beginning of First Christian Church of Granbury was in the fall of 1873 when Joseph Addison Clark and his two sons, Addison and Randolph, established the AddRan Male and Female College in Thorp Spring, 3.8 miles northwest of Granbury.  The history of First Christian Church is closely tied to that of AddRan College, which eventually evolved into Texas Christian University (TCU).

THE ORIGINAL HOME OF FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH OF GRANBURY

original building

original building

In 1873 when Randolph Clark came to Hood County from Fort Worth to help establish AddRan College, he reported finding a small group of “Campbellites” meeting in the courthouse.  J.H. Harbison, the livery stable owner, preached on Sundays. The church began to serve as the church home of Clark and his family as well as the students of AddRan College.  The Clarks and AddRan (TCU) eventually moved to Waco and finally to Fort Worth, but some congregants stayed behind to minister to the community of Granbury.  In 1889 members of the congregation constructed a frame building at the southeast corner of Houston and Bluff Streets. The deed to the building was filed in Hood County on April 22, 1889.

The congregation worshiped in this building for the next 97 years. The original frame building has since been moved to the corner of Bridge and Brazos Streets, where it is now the Dora Lee Langdon Cultural and Education Center, a concert hall of Tarleton State University.

On Easter Sunday in 1986 the members of First Christian Church worshiped for the first time in the newly constructed limestone building at 2109 West Highway 377. In 1998 the congregation dedicated the $1.3 million addition including a fellowship hall/gymnasium, an enlarged sanctuary, a classroom wing, a new and enlarged nursery, and a lobby with an atrium and a foyer.

GROUNDBREAKING FOR OUR NEWEST ADDITION IN 2006

In June 2006 we celebrated the completion of the most recent addition to our facilities. The new building includes offices, bathrooms with showers, two large classrooms for youth, additional classrooms for adults, and a library area. The earlier education wing is now devoted to our children's ministry.

We burned the mortgage to the 2006 addition in March of 2012 and are now completely debt free.  In less than two generations, FCC has gone from a worshiping membership that would barely fill two pews to one with a membership of approximately 380 and with worship attendance averaging over 200 each Sunday.  FCC is currently dreaming about what God is calling us to be in the next phase of our life.  We are excited to explore new ways to love and serve Granbury.
